Recently heard J. R. Moehringer being interviewed on NPR. He is a local Long Island boy raised by a single mom and a bar of interesting souls where his uncle was a bar tender, captured in his memoirs THE TENdER BAR. I read his more recent book, SULLIVAN, which is receiving mucho attention. Yale grad, the kid can write. He captures the tale of a gentleman, romantic bank robber which might make you rethink about our own times, and about occupying Wall Street. Past and present and mystery weave throughout the story. The lost chances, the skills, the bravado, the Russian exile doomed doll and the ever illusive one who got away.

I recently finished Louise Erdrich’s “The Roundhouse.” It is being called a sequel to “A Plague of Doves.” While it has some of the same characters, the main action takes place decades later and the feeling of the book is quite different. I had the sense that the earlier book was in some ways getting rid of some personal demons. This book focuses on the injustices of US law when it comes to justice for the First Nations. It opens with a vicious rape, that can be seen as a stand in for the treatment and attitudes of Europeans towards the people they found here. It is at the same time, a coming of age story. It is moving and full of Erdrich’s great characters. It doesn’t have the complexity of some of her other novels, but it does have love, great stories, a also, great laughs.
